Alright, Week 26 in the Premier League just wrapped, and if you thought things were settling down, you haven't been paying attention. Arsenal still sits atop the pile, but Manchester City is breathing down their neck. This isn't last season's runaway. Not by a long shot.

The Top Two and a Familiar Feeling

Arsenal's got 60 points after 26 games. That's a good haul, especially considering how many pundits wrote them off after Christmas. They've won four of their last five league matches, including that gritty 3-2 victory over Manchester United back in January. Martin Odegaard has been instrumental, pulling strings and chipping in with 8 goals and 6 assists so far.

But here's the kicker: Manchester City is only two points behind, with a game in hand. That 3-1 win against Arsenal at the Emirates a few weeks ago felt like a psychological blow, even if Mikel Arteta's side bounced back immediately. Erling Haaland's 27 league goals are a ridiculous number, frankly. He’s already surpassed his best season in the Bundesliga with Dortmund, and we're only in March. City’s underlying numbers, like their xG difference, still suggest they’re the most dominant team in the league. They just haven't always converted that dominance into maximum points this year.

Thing is, this feels a lot like 2018-19, when Liverpool pushed City right to the wire. Liverpool finished with 97 points that year, City with 98. Arsenal, with their current points total, is on pace for around 87-88 points. That might not be enough if City gets into their usual rhythm. The Gunners need to find another gear, especially when they face teams like Newcastle and Brighton in the coming weeks.

Relegation Scramble: A Tight Squeeze

Down at the bottom, it's a mess. There are five teams separated by just four points. Bournemouth is currently sitting 19th with 21 points, while Everton, Leeds, and West Ham all have 22 points. Southampton is dead last with 20 points. Any one of those teams could go down. It's truly that close.

Southampton, despite their position, actually showed some fight with a surprising 1-0 win over Chelsea recently, but their overall form is dire, losing 16 of their 26 league games. Everton, under Sean Dyche, has found a bit of steel, picking up 7 points from their last 5 matches. That 1-0 win against Arsenal was huge for them. Leeds, on the other hand, just can't seem to buy a win, and their defensive record is alarming; they've conceded 42 goals, the third-worst in the league.

Here's my hot take: West Ham, despite their talent, are in serious trouble. David Moyes' side has only won one of their last five league games, and their xG conceded (expected goals conceded) of 39.5 is far too high for a team that should be mid-table. They've got some tough fixtures coming up, and their European distraction won't help.

Surprises and Disappointments

Brighton has to be the overperformer of the season, hands down. They're sitting 7th with 39 points, just four points off a European spot, and they've played two fewer games than Tottenham above them. Roberto De Zerbi has them playing some exquisite football. Their 4-0 thrashing of West Ham was a masterclass. Pascal Gross, with 6 goals and 6 assists, has been immense, and Kaoru Mitoma is a revelation on the wing, scoring 7 league goals.

On the flip side, Chelsea, despite spending north of £600 million this season, is a massive underperformer. They're 10th with 34 points, closer to the relegation zone than the top four. Graham Potter's side has only scored 24 goals in 25 league games, a truly pathetic return for a squad of that caliber. Enzo Fernandez has added some control in midfield, but they still look toothless in attack. Joao Felix has shown flashes, but one goal in six league appearances isn't enough.

Newcastle United, while still in the top four, has cooled off significantly. They've drawn four of their last five league games and only scored 2 goals in those matches. Their defensive solidity is still there – they've only conceded 17 goals all season, the best in the league – but they need to find their attacking spark again if they want to hold onto a Champions League spot. Losing Nick Pope to a red card in the Liverpool game was a blow.

Final Stretch Prediction

The title race will go down to the final day, but Manchester City's experience and depth will ultimately tell. They'll just edge out Arsenal. As for the bottom, I think Southampton and Bournemouth are gone. The third spot is a coin flip between West Ham and Everton, but I'm leaning towards West Ham finally succumbing. They've just looked too disjointed for too long.

Bold prediction: Manchester City wins the league by three points, and Brighton snatches a European qualification spot, finishing 6th.
