Langkah Selanjutnya Caufield: Bisakah Dia Menjadi Pencetak Gol Terbanyak Montreal?
The Road to 30 Goals, and Beyond
Cole Caufield wrapped up his 2023-24 season with 28 goals for the Montreal Canadiens, a solid output for the winger. This marked his second consecutive season hitting the 20-goal plateau, following his 26 goals in just 46 games during the 2022-23 campaign before a season-ending shoulder surgery in January 2023. He played all 82 games this past season, showing durability after his previous injury.
Thing is, Montreal signed Caufield to an eight-year, $62.8 million contract extension in June 2023. That deal carries an average annual value of $7.85 million. The expectation, naturally, is for him to lead the offensive charge. Nick Suzuki, the team captain, posted a career-high 33 goals this past season, establishing himself as the primary offensive threat. For the Canadiens to truly contend, they'll need more consistent scoring from multiple sources.
Power Play Production and Even Strength Impact
A significant portion of Caufield's offense comes on the man advantage. In 2023-24, 10 of his 28 goals were scored on the power play. That's good, but it also means his even-strength production needs to climb. He recorded 18 even-strength goals, a slight increase from his 14 even-strength tallies in the abbreviated 2022-23 season. Montreal's power play finished 27th in the league at 17.6% efficiency, so there's room for improvement across the board.
Real talk: Caufield's shooting percentage this past season was 12.8%, slightly below his career average of 14.1%. He took 218 shots on goal, an average of 2.66 shots per game. To consistently hit 30 or even 35 goals, Caufield will need to elevate his shot volume or improve his efficiency further. His linemates, often Suzuki and Juraj Slafkovsky, also play a role in creating those opportunities. Slafkovsky, the 2022 first overall pick, showed promising development with 16 goals and 44 points in his second NHL season.
I predict Caufield hits 35 goals next season, solidifying his role as a top-tier sniper for the Canadiens.
