Blues đánh bại Capitals trong cuộc đối đầu gay cấn, phơi bày những lo ngại về chiều sâu đội hình của Washington
St. Louis Holds Off Late Push
The St. Louis Blues secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory over the Washington Capitals on Tuesday night at Enterprise Center. Robert Thomas broke a 2-2 tie with a wrist shot at 11:32 of the third period, his 15th goal of the season. Jordan Binnington made 28 saves for the Blues, who improved their home record to 16-9-2.
Washington’s T.J. Oshie, a former Blue, scored his 10th goal of the year early in the second period, briefly tying the game at 1-1. Alex Ovechkin recorded an assist on Connor McMichael's power-play goal at 7:51 of the third, which had knotted the score at two before Thomas’s winner. Charlie Lindgren stopped 25 shots in the loss for the Capitals.
Capitals' Offensive Struggles Persist
The Capitals' offensive output continues to be a concern, particularly outside of their top line. They managed only two goals against a disciplined Blues defense. Washington is now 2-4-1 in their last seven games, averaging just 2.14 goals per contest during that span. Ovechkin has shown flashes of his old self, with 20 goals this season, but consistent secondary scoring remains elusive for head coach Spencer Carbery’s squad.
Washington’s power play, while converting once against St. Louis, still ranks 20th in the league at 18.6%. That’s not good enough for a team with Ovechkin and John Carlson quarterbacking the unit. They need more production from key forwards like Anthony Mantha, who has just nine goals through 53 games.
Blues' Grinding Identity Pays Off
St. Louis, under interim coach Drew Bannister, has found a more defined identity built on strong defensive play and timely scoring. They’ve now won three of their last four, and their penalty kill went a perfect 3-for-3 against Washington. Pavel Buchnevich also contributed a goal, his 17th of the campaign, further illustrating the balanced attack St. Louis often relies on.
Real talk: The Blues aren't going to light up the scoreboard every night, but they're showing they can win ugly. That's a valuable trait, especially as they battle for a Wild Card spot in the Western Conference. They sit just two points out of a playoff position, a testament to their recent turnaround.
